Unidentified Flying Object files released by British military

LONDON — Alitalia pilot Achille Zaghetti thought it was like a missile.

Zaghetti was at the helm of a jet from Milan to London’s Heathrow Airport on the evening of April 21, 1991 when a flying object streaked across his field of vision.

‘‘At once I said, ’look out, look out,’ to my co-pilot, who looked out and saw what I had seen,’’ Zaghetti wrote in his report. ‘‘As soon as the object crossed us I asked to the ACC (area control center) operator if he saw something on his screen and he answered ’I see an unknown target 10 nautical miles behind you.’’

An investigation later ruled out a missile — but never ruled anything in, either.

The close encounter is one of many reported UFO sightings among 19 files that Britain’s National Archives posted Monday to the Web. The new material covers UFO sightings between 1986 and 1992.

While the 1,500-page batch of documents debunks a host of UFO sightings, others like Zaghetti’s near-miss with a UFO remain unexplained.

On June 17, 1991, four passengers on a Hamburg, Germany-bound Dan Air 737 spotted ‘‘a wingless projectile pass below and to the left of the aircraft’’ as the flight climbed out of London’s Gatwick Airport.

‘‘It would seem to have passed fairly close by as the passengers were able to see it quite clearly,’’ the Civil Aviation Authority wrote in its report.

More disturbing was a sighting a month later by crew aboard a Gatwick-bound Britannia Airways Boeing 737, who saw ‘‘a small black lozenge-shaped object’’ zipping past about 100 yards (90 meters) to the left of the aircraft.
The airport confirmed seeing an object on its radar and clocked it traveling at 120 miles (190 kilometers) per hour. Air traffic controllers quickly warned the next aircraft to turn out of the object’s flight path, although by then the object had disappeared from view.

Speculation centered on a weather balloon released in the area the same day, but an investigation could not determine what the UFO was.

Monday’s release is the second batch of UFO files that Britain’s military has put out this year. David Clarke, a UFO expert who has worked with the National Archives, said in the next few years, a total of 160 UFO-related files will be made available to the public.

Some things in the newly released files were either unhinged or unverifiable.

One U.S. pilot’s tale of being ordered to shoot down a UFO over eastern England, forwarded to the Ministry of Defense by a UFO enthusiast, was kept on file even though the military turned up no evidence of it in its official records.

LONDON — An American fighter pilot flying from an English air base at the height of the Cold War was ordered to open fire on a massive UFO that lit up his radar, according to an account published by Britain's National Archives on Monday.

The fighter pilot said he was ordered to fire a full salvo of rockets at the UFO moving erratically over the North Sea — but that at the last minute the object picked up enormous speed and disappeared. The account, first published in Britain's Daily Star newspaper more than 17 years ago and to this day unverified by military authorities, was one of many carried in the 1,500 pages the archives made available online.

The unnamed pilot said he and another airman were scrambled on the night of May 20, 1957 to intercept an unusual "bogey" on radars at a Royal Air Force Station Manston, an airfield at the southeastern tip of England about 75 miles from central London.

"This was a flying object with very unusual flight patterns," the pilot said, according to a typed manuscript of his account mailed to Britain's Ministry of Defense by a UFO enthusiast in 1988. "In the initial briefing it was suggested to us that the bogey actually was motionless for long intervals."

Ordered to fly at full throttle in cloudy weather, the pilot said he was given the order to fire a volley of 24 rockets at the mysterious object.

"To be quite candid I almost (expletive) my pants!" the pilot said, saying he asked for confirmation — which he received.

Retired U.S. airman Milton Torres told Britain's Sky News on Monday that he was the pilot and has spent 50 frustrating years attempting to uncover the truth of his mid-air encounter.

Speaking from his home in Miami, Florida, Torres said he never saw the UFO with his naked eye, but watched in awe as it appeared on his jet's radar and sped off before he had chance to fire.

"All of a sudden as it was coming in, it decided to take off and leave me behind ... The next thing I know it was gone," Torres told Sky News. "It was some kind of space alien craft. It was so fast, it was so incredible ... it was absolutely death defying."

In the newly published government file, the U.S. airman said the UFO appeared impossible to miss.

"The blip was burning a hole in the radar with its incredible intensity," the pilot said. "It was similar to a blip I had received from B-52's and seemed to be a magnet of light. ... I had a lock on that had the proportions of a flying aircraft carrier."

As he closed in on the object to prepare for combat, however, the object began to move wildly before fading off his radar. The target gone, the mission was called off, and he returned to base to an odd reception.

"I had not the foggiest idea what had actually occurred, nor would anyone explain anything to me," the pilot said. He said he was led to a man in civilian clothes, who "advised me that this would be considered highly classified and that I should not discuss it with anybody not even my commander."

"He disappeared without so much as a goodbye and that was that, as far as I was concerned," the pilot said, according to the account.

Britain's military said it had no record of the incident, according to the files. Neither did the U.S. military. The second pilot's account, also included in the files, paints a somewhat different picture of events, saying there were not one but several "unknowns" and that he did not remember being contacted by anyone about staying quiet. He did not mention the targets' size.

"I know this is not a very exciting narrative but it is all I can recall," the second pilot said.
His name, like his colleague's, was redacted from the files.

David Clarke, a UFO expert who has worked with the National Archives on the document release, said it was one of the most intriguing stories he had culled from the batch of files released Monday.

He said that the CIA once had a program intended to create phantom signals on radar — and that this may have been an exercise in electronic warfare. Whatever the case, Clarke argued that "there's no doubt something very unusual happened."

Clarke said the batch of files released Monday — which include witness accounts, investigations, and sketches — was part of a three to four year program intended to make a total of 160 UFO-related files available to the public.

If you believe former fighter pilot Milton Torres' story — and news organizations are running with it — the Air Force was seconds from attacking an alien aircraft over England late one cloudy night in 1957.
Possible interstellar war was averted when the unidentified flying object sped away.

"It was not made of this Earth," said Torres, 77, a retired Florida International University engineering professor.
"I'd love to take a tour of that ... UFO, whatever it was."

The account was included in thousands of pages of UFO-related documents recently declassified by the British Ministry of Defense and posted online. To everyone's surprise, the truth was not just out there, but in Florida, where Torres lives with his wife, Dorothy.

By midweek, he'd done a television interview with Great Britain's Sky News and been featured on "Good Morning America." "Nightline" had panned across pictures of him as a young lieutenant. Reporters were calling hourly, and Dorothy was leaving the phone off the hook at night.

Torres' account begins with him scrambling his F-86D Sabre jet from an airfield in Kent, near the southeast coast, to intercept what he has since called a UFO circling East Anglia.

Ground control vectored him in at top speed, around 700 mph, and gave the order to "fire a full salvo of rockets at the UFO."

From 15 miles away, he locked on to a target as big as an aircraft carrier, according to his radar screen. He was on course to intercept in 10 seconds but still hadn't seen the thing when it started to move away. Within seconds, the UFO was off lock; it soon vanished.

Back at the airfield, Torres was told the mission would be considered classified. The next day, an American who looked "like a well-dressed IBM salesman, with a dark-blue trench coat," debriefed him and warned he would be breaching national security if he talked about what had happened.

Looking back, Torres said he's glad he never got a shot off that night; surely a craft capable of moving as that one did would have had weapons systems to match. "I would have been vaporized," he said.
"Just a dumb little kid going to slaughter."

He's angry, convinced that the British and U.S. governments have information they're not sharing; and wistful, because he believes he'll never know the truth. "We can't be alone out here," he said.

The phone then rang, CNN on the line.

Andere gevallen zijn wat moeilijker te verklaren. Zo is er de melding van zes Britse straaljagerpiloten die in 1990 boven Nederland werden ingehaald door een groot onbekend voorwerp. Ze vlogen 1,8 keer de snelheid van het geluid toen ze werden ingehaald.

Bijna-botsing
Een jaar later meldde een Italiaanse piloot dat het passagiersvliegtuig van Alitalia dat hij bestuurde vlak voor de landing op vliegveld Heathrow bijna frontaal op een UFO botste. Een bruin, langwerpig voorwerp schoot vlak langs het vliegtuig.

"Ik zei nog tegen mijn co-piloot dat hij moest uitkijken en ook hij zag het voorwerp", staat in het nu pas vrijgegeven rapport van het ministerie van Defensie, dat bovendien benadrukt dat ook de controletoren een vreemd object signaleerde.

Uit onderzoek door het ministerie van Defensie bleek dat het geen raket kon zijn en dat het ook niet kon worden afgedaan als weerballon. Defensie sloot het onderzoek zonder een goede verklaring te vinden.

Vliegend vliegdekschip
Dat UFO-meldingen niet alleen iets zijn van de laatste twintig jaar bewijst het verhaal van een Amerikaanse legerpiloot die tijdens de Koude Oorlog in Engeland gelegerd was. Hem werd opgedragen om een UFO neer te halen bij Norwich.

Hij moest al zijn 24 raketten afvuren op een vliegend voorwerp dat volgens de radar een grootte zou moeten hebben van een flink vliegdekschip. Dat lukte echter niet, het voorwerp ging er vandoor met een duizelingwekkende snelheid van bijna 16.000 kilometer per uur.

Waarschijnlijk is dit niet het laatste onverklaarbare verhaal dat uit de documenten tevoorschijn zal komen. De komende vier jaar wil het Engelse ministerie van Defensie nog ongeveer 200 van zulke documenten stapsgewijs gaan vrijgeven.

Dos pilotos estadounidenses recibieron la orden de disparar lo más rápido posible a un Objeto Volador No Identificado (OVNI) sobre cielo inglés, según revela 'The times'.

Según uno de los sobrevivientes del encuentro, Milton Torres de 77 años y residente en Miami, el OVNI tendría el tamaño de un portaaviones volador y que antes de retirarse a 12 mil kilómetros por hora, permaneció suspendido por unos segundos frente a su avión.

Tras el incidente, un personaje misterioso, supuestamente perteneciente a la Agencia Nacional de Seguridad estadounidense, ordenó a Torres que nunca hablara del incidente, y desde entonces, durante más de 30 años, guardó un celoso silencio. En 1988 participó en la redacción de un informe para el Ministerio de Defensa británico.

Luego de esto, el ex piloto dijo que un sujeto sin identificarse, pero del gobierno lo amenazó con acusarlo de violación a la seguridad nacional si hablaba una palabra sobre el OVNI.

"Sólo era un teniente y no muy consciente de la gravedad de la situación. Me sentí como un cojo en un concurso de patear culos", dijo Torres.

Otros avistamientos

La historia de Torres forma parte de las decenas de archivos sobre avistamientos de ovnis del Ministerio de Defensa desclasificados por los Archivos Nacionales de Londres.

En referencia a otro caso, también se dio a conocer que un vuelo comercial de Alitalia estuvo a punto de chocar contra un objeto volador al grado que el piloto de la nave gritó ¡cuidado! A su copiloto cuando vio el platillo.

 Este misterioso incidente ocurrió en el condado de Kent, al sureste de Inglaterra, el 21 de abril de 1991 y fue investigado por la Autoridad de Aviación Civil (CAA) y los militares. El avión de Alitalia, un McDonnell Douglas MD80, hacía la ruta entre Milán (Italia) y Heathrow (Londres) con 57 personas a bordo cuando el piloto Achille Zaghetti observó el objeto no identificado, que estaba a unos 300 metros por encima de su aparato.

Das riesige Objekt habe die Umrisse einer Art Flugzeug gehabt, meldete der Zeuge, es seien fünf bis sechs weiße und ein blaues Licht an dem unbekannten Flugobjekt zu sehen gewesen. Und es habe Kondensstreifen hinter sich hergezogen (Anmerkung: die Ionisierung der Luft). Was immer das Objekt antrieb, es muss ihm höchsten Schub verschafft haben: Es überholte sechs in Weeze-Laarbruch stationierte Tornado-Jets der Royal Air Force, die sich mit Überschallgeschwindigkeit auf einem Übungsflug befanden.

Der Bericht über die UFO-Sichtung am 5. November 1990 gegen 18 Uhr über dem niederländischen Ypenburg sticht unter den üblichen Berichten über fliegende Untertassen vor allem deshalb hervor, weil ihn ein Staffelführer der 2. Squadron der RAF in Laarbruch abgab und die Besatzungen der übrigen fünf mitfliegenden Tornados ihn bestätigten!

Zunächst habe sich das riesige Flugobjekt auf gleicher Höhe mit den Tornados befunden, sie dann überholt und sei anschließend geradeaus mit großer Geschwindigkeit davongeflogen und aufgestiegen. Weil das niederländische Radar störungsfrei funktioniert habe, das Objekt aber nicht anzeigte, vermute man eine Art Tarnkappen-Technologie, erklärten die Zeugen weiter.

Deux avions de chasse de l'US Air Force avaient reçu en 1957, en pleine Guerre froide, l'ordre d'abattre un objet volant non identifié (Ovni) au-dessus de l'Angleterre, révèlent des dossiers confidentiels du ministère britannique de la Défense rendus publics lundi à Londres.

L'un des deux pilotes, Milton Torres, aujourd'hui âgé de 77 ans et qui vit en retraite à Miami, était sur le point de tirer 24 roquettes lorsque cet Ovni, dont les évolutions étaient imprévisibles et la signature radar faisait penser à "un porte-avions volant", a soudainement disparu des écrans.

Torres, alors lieutenant, a témoigné que l'objet était un moment resté immobile avant de disparaître à une vitesse estimée à plus de 12.000 km/h.

Revenu à sa base, Torres a été convoqué par un inconnu, "bien habillé, comme un vendeur d'IBM", qui lui a ordonné de garder le silence sur toute cette affaire, ce qu'il a fait pendant plus de trente ans.

Le récit de Torres figure parmi des dizaines d'autres témoignages sur les Ovni qui viennent d'être remis aux archives nationales britanniques.

Dans son témoignage manuscrit, Torres raconte comment il a décollé un soir aux commandes de son chasseur F-86 D Sabre de la base de la Royal Air Force de Manston, dans le Kent, en mai 1957.

"Je n'étais que lieutenant mais j'avais bien conscience de la gravité de la situation. Avant même de décoller, j'ai reçu l'ordre d'ouvrir le feu sur l'Ovni, dont la signature radar faisait penser à un porte-avions volant."

Au dernier moment, juste avant le tir, l'objet a disparu de son écran radar et la poursuite a été annulée.

Rentré à Manston, Torres a été conduit le lendemain devant l'homme qui l'a menacé de poursuites s'il disait un seul mot de cette affaire à qui que ce soit.

Le dossier n'avance aucune explication sur la nature de cet incident.

Selon un spécialiste des Ovni, David Clarke, toute cette affaire pourrait avoir un rapport avec des recherches menées à l'époque par les Américains pour saturer les écrans radar adverses avec des images erronées, afin de tromper la défense aérienne de l'Union soviétique. "Mais il est bien évident que quelque chose d'inhabituel s'est passé", concède-t-il.

Un avión de Alitalia que operaba la ruta entre Milán y Londres-Heathrow estuvo a punto de chocarse contra un OVNI en abril de 1991 en Lydd, cerca del condado de Kent, según documentos del Ministerio de Defensa de Reino Unido citados por la cadena 'BBC'.

   El capitán del vuelo de Alitalia gritó "cuidado" a su copiloto al observar un objeto marrón con forma de misil, que pasó a gran velocidad cerca del aparato.

   En ese momento, la Autoridad de Aviación Civil y los investigadores militares no consiguieron encontrar ninguna explicación de este incidente y tras descartar que el objeto fuera un misil, un globo meteorológico o un cohete espacial, los responsables de Defensa cerraron la investigación.

   Un total de 19 archivos sobre apariciones de OVNIS se han hecho públicos en Internet, siendo el segundo conjunto de documentos de este tipo en ser desclasificados tras un primer lote dado a conocer en mayo de este año. Casi 200 archivos similares serán publicados en los próximos cuatro años por el Ministerio de Defensa.

   Entre las historias publicadas figura el caso de un piloto de caza estadounidense a quien en mayo de 1957, en medio de la Guerra Fría, le ordenaron despegar lo más rápidamente posible y derribar a un OVNI que volaba sobre East Anglia (Reino Unido).

   Tras colocarse a 24 kilómetros del objeto, del tamaño de un portaaviones, y cuando estaba a escasos segundos de disparar, el objeto desapareció sin dejar rastro.
